History of Mattese

Mattese Creek, a tributary to the Meramec River, is a spring fed stream that flows over five miles within the heart of South St. Louis County. The stream itself has been a landmark for over a hundred years. In fact, when Assumption school and parish was founded, their meetings took place on a ridge that overlooked the creek. Even more, the creek offered a valuable source of fresh water to nearby farmland. Although the land surrounding the creek has surrendered to modern urbanization, the creek itself has never changed.

Despite being located in the middle of suburban town, the creek still offers a tranquil outdoor experience. The stream continuously flows and has a healthy population of white and largemouth bass, sunfish, creek chubs, and bait fish. The wooded shoreline teems with wildlife ranging from turkeys, deer, coyotes, and bald eagles. Beginning as a natural spring, the creek winds its way through town navigating under countless bridges, tunnels, and caves before finally joining with the Meramec River. The creek has been a home to many for over 175 years and will always be a place of respite for both us and our followers. Whether you are there to fish, drink, or just relax, Mattese Creek will answer your call.
